At the end of the 19th century Nicola Petrera, an ancestor of the current owner, chose the Spinomarino hill, the most aired and sunny one in the Gaudella area, to grow Primitivo grapes. Filippo Petrera who oversees production today, has preserved both tradition and passion for this Primitivo until this very day.
The upmost care is taken over the quality of production, with organic viticulture practiced, and music therapy in the cellar so as to promote the micro oxygenation and the activity of the living micro flora in the wine. Use of sulphur is limited, as the grapes are transferred straight into the winery from harvest, and all the steps of production take place on sight. Fermentation takes place naturally, and they are bottled without filtration. Their entire operation is powered by solar energy, making them carbon neutral.
Vineyards
Vineyards are 365m above sea level, thin layers of red earth mixed with limestone and silica sit on huge fossil-rich monolithic reefs, 40-50 hectolitres per hectare yield. Vines are farmed organically.
Vinification
12 months in stainless steel tanks, 12 months in Slavonic oak 750-liter-casks, 6 months in bottle.
Tasting Notes
Primitivo Riserva Gioia del Colle Fatalone, organic, low sulphur, rich, intense, rustic, full-bodied Natural red from the South of Italy. It is exotically rich, super-ripe and oozing scents of fruits-in-alcohol and spicy-toasted wood. For those who love the intensity of a hot climate red which packs a serious punch right the way through the bottle, this is the wine for you! But despite it's intensity, this doesn't lack complexity.
Drink with beef shank or a rich stew.
