Producer Information

When it comes to English wine theres' a lot to shout about, not least the stunning sparkling wines from Henners. Based just 4 miles from the sea in Herstmonceux, East Sussex, the 7 acre vineyard was created in 2007 by ex-Formula One engineer, Lawrence Warr.

The winery was named in honour of Larry's French ancestor, Henners Dubois, who was forced to flee Paris for England during the French Revolution in the in the late 18th Century. Boutinot was the sole distributor of Henners from this time and developed strong ties with the winery and its wines so when the opportunity arose 10 years later to buy the estate, they jumped at the chance.

Planted with traditional Champagne varieties of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, the vines thrive in an idyllic microclimate created by the vineyard's proximity to the sea, low altitude (only 24 metres above sea level) and steep, sunny, south facing slopes. All Henners wines are hand-crafted from start to finish; with separate fermenting of varietals and their vine clones to allow a broader range of wines for final blending; extended lees ageing for added complexity; and holding back of all bottles for at least 3 years prior to release to add depth and richness to every wine. Hand-crafted with every attention to detail, our winemakers create award winning wines of depth, complexity and elegance that are perfect for any occasion.

Henners is proud to release Native Grace, our multi-vintage prestige cuvee. The label design is inspired by Thomas Bewick (1753, 1828), the Northumbrian artist acclaimed for his incredibly detailed, captivating wood-engravings of English life and nature. Bewick's innate skill with this intricate medium proved transformative to the art of wood-engraving and the illustration of natural history. He was also known for his wicked, yet always sympathetic, humour - capturing drunks, louts and fools in the landscape of the day. Most of his pieces were engraved to be printed directly into books and are rarely larger than the palm of your hand, indeed he would sketch the idea on his thumbnail before committing to wood. *Label image: Tail-piece in A History of British Birds, is said to be of Bewick himself as a thirsty traveller drinking from his hat.

This prestige wine allows us to blend the very best base wines from numerous vintages (2009, 2010 and 2011) to create a sparkling wine that is greater than the sum of its illustrious parts. As with all our wines, only fruit grown in our outstanding vineyard is used for our blends.

Multi-vintage should not be confused with non-vintage, where a proportion of aged base wines are added to the current vintage to accelerate the progression of the producer's entry level wines. Multi-vintage is the ultimate indulgence in the crafting of the finest sparkling wine.

The best base wines from each vintage are selected for their ageing potential and kept aside for reserve wines. They are then cellared, in bottle at partial pressure on lees, until ready for addition to a multi-vintage prestige blend in years to come.

Cellaring reserve wines in this labour-intensive manner, as opposed to storing them in stainless steel tanks, allows the wines to develop complexity on lees, preventing oxidation, and so maintains the greatest elegance and finesse.

This patience and dedication is realised when we come to blend the base wines for our multi-vintage wine. The broad palette of outstanding reserve wines from many vintages allows us to create something very special.

The final assemblage for this inaugural release took place in August 2014, before disgorgement in March 2017, and bottled at pressure 4.6 bar so as not to overpower its delicate complexity. The debut launch of this limited production of only 980 bottles took place in September 2018. As pioneers in multi-vintage winemaking, we continue our passion for crafting the very finest sparkling wines, from possibly the greatest vineyard in the country.

Tasting Notes

Pale lemon in colour with a fine and delicate mousse. The nose is multi-layered with notes of ripe apple, lemon curd, brioche and marzipan. The complexity on the nose is mirrored on the palate with lovely ripe apple and lemon fruit which combine with autolytic characters such as sweet pastry and almonds. The gently persistent fizz allows the depth of flavour to really shine and the wonderful acidity gives mouth-watering balance on the finish.
