Producer Information

Hattingley Valley is a family owned business located in Hampshire specialising in premium English sparkling wines.

Simon Robinson established Hattingley Valley in 2008. Following in depth feasibility studies, the first 28 acre south facing site was planted in May of that year with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Alongside Emma Rice they planned the modern, eco-friendly winery in Wield that was completed in 2010. It uses the latest technology and equipment from continental Europe, has sophisticated waste disposal facilities and was the first UK winery to adopt solar power. In the UK top six in capacity we also benefit from having a full wine analysis laboratory on site.

They currently manage over 24 hectares (60 acres) of vines across two well-situated sites under the watchful eyes of the vineyard managers. The vines are nurtured throughout the growing year with an environmentally-sensitive approach to viticulture ensuring optimum ripeness, yield and quality of fruit.

At Hattingley Valley, they use the traditional method for making wines. A key element of their style is the subtle use of oak barrels to ferment a small proportion of the wines each year, as well as ageing on lees in stainless steel tanks. This helps to soften the wines before they go into bottles for the second fermentation. The wine making team is led by Emma Rice who trained at Plumpton College and has worked overseas in other major wine areas including Tasmania and California. Emma was awarded the prestigious title of Winemaker of the Year in 2014 in the English and Welsh Wine of the Year Competition. Emma reclaimed this honour in 2016 and is the first woman to be awarded the title twice.

Since launching its first release in August 2013, Hattingley Valley has been recognised in competitions across the globe and developed into one of the most respected producers of English sparkling wines in the country. Hattingley was awarded the World Champion' trophy for its 2011 Blanc de Blancs in the Champagne and Sparkling Wine World Championships 2017. This is an exciting addition to the trophy cabinet which includes Best Vintage Rose awarded to the 2011 vintage, Hattingley's first release of this style, by the same competition in 2014.

Today, Hattingley's sparkling wines are enjoyed locally and they export to 16 countries around the world as far afield as Sydney, San Francisco and Kazakhstan; they are proud to be locally acclaimed and internationally renowned.

Grapes

Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir

Production

This wine is a testament to our signature style, whereby after the grapes were harvested, 25% of the total blend was barrel fermented in three-to-four year old white Burgundy giving the wine lovely texture and richness. The wine spent 8 months in tank and barrel on its fermentation lees. There was no stirring or addition of sulphur dioxide, with occasional topping up. Tirage took place in July 2011 and then the wine spent 21 months ageing on its lees with a further four months on cork after disgorging.

Tasting Notes

An elegant, svelte and super pure wine with delicate nose of hedgerow flowers, it has finesse, vibrant green fruit and a characteristic toasty flavour. Pale gold in colour and well-balanced on the palate showing crisp acidity and fine mousse. It has delicate toasty characteristics from being aged on lees whilst the gentle oak flavour adds complexity.

This is the perfect aperitif or celebration drink, it is the flawless accompaniment to any party, enjoyed with any canape.
