Casa Clara is a 3rd generation family project and their wines are created 100% from the grapes of their two properties located in the heart of Alentejo: the Herdade da Capela, on the left bank of the Guadiana, in the Moura sub-region, and Quinta de D. Maria in the Serra do Mendro, near the Alqueva, in the sub-region of Vidigueira.
The name of the company is a tribute to Mariana’s mother, Clara Roque do Vale, who have always be linked to the world of wines, having been distinguished in 2020 with the award "The Best of the Year" (together with Jancis Robinson MW) of Revista de Vinhos who highlighted her as a "pioneer, booster and profound militant of the development of Alentejo as a region producing wines of international quality".
Representing the 'new generation' of the family, Mariana intends to bring a modern vision and approach in the world of wines, including the production of wines with little intervention, lighter, with lower alcohol content and with more freshness as the sub-regions allow.
A Sustainable project is a large part of their mission. Work to limit carbon emissions, save ecosystems and preserve the biodiversity that is essential to protect our planet. Casa Clara is a proud, certified member of the 'Programa de Sustentabilidade dos Vinhos do Alentejo' (the Alentejo Wines Sustainability Programme). All their practices, be it in the vineyards or in the cellar, are sustainable. What they plant depends on the climate, the soils, and the local communities.
Sustainability also has a social component, promoting gender equality and encourages employment of local workers, strengthening their connection with the community. They work progressively towards organic farming and renewable energy sources.
Vineyards
Perched above the Guadiana river, between Alqueva & Serra Do Mendro, Quinta Dona Maria benefits from a microclimate & also the proximity of the river at an altitude of 300m.
Vinification
Aged in stainless steel tank for 8 months.
Tasting Notes
Intense ruby in colour. On the nose, aromatic finesse with black forest notes of blackberry & dark cherry. On the palate this is a very fresh & elegant, well balanced wine. Loamy-sandy soils originating from shale & greywacke contribute to a stony minerality. The finish is long with a smooth tannic structure.
Perfect with Mediterranean tomato based dishes. Also works well with turkey, plenta and mushrooms with game bird.
