Gérard Thomas's domain is a family one, on which Gérard, the father, and his 2 daughters, Anne and Isabelle, who have recently joined the family winery, work. The quality of their wines is soaring. This domain, from an area of 12 hectares, stretches out on the communes of Saint-Aubin, Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet. Saint Aubin offers some of the best value in the Côte de Beaune; aromatic, oaky wines in the same style as their better known neighbours.
The day-to-day running of this fine domaine is now in the highly capable hands of Gérard's two daughters, Anne and Isabelle. Their technical training has resulted in fresher, purer wines with more precise flavours. In addition, all the wines are now barrel fermented and the quality of the Saint Aubin Champ Tirant has improved tremendously as a result.
Nestled up on the hill in-between the villages of Meursault and Puligny lies the quiet hamlet of Blagny. The vineyard is adjacent to the Puligny-Montrachet border where the 1.07 hectares of vines were planted back in 1981 on a mixture of marl and limestone soils.
Harvesting is by hand with careful handling of complete bunches to avoid oxidation and several passes through the vineyard during harvest to ensure optimum ripeness. All the whites are barrel fermented with 25% new oak used. Ten months in cask follows, with regular lees stirring to add depth.
This is a really exciting parcel of Meursault with powerful aromas of citrus peel. The palate is intense and finely balanced with exotic citrus fruit, minerality and an extremely deft use of oak.
