The story of WhistlePig begins in 2007, with Raj Peter Bhakta buying a farm in Shoreham, Vermont, with the idea of creating some ace rye whiskey. Teaming up with Master Distiller Dave Pickerell, who was the Master Distiller at Maker’s Mark for 14 years, WhistlePig sourced a top quality, 100% rye whiskey from Canada, then finished and bottled it at the WhistlePig farm. Their most well-known expression, the WhistlePig 10 Year Old, is presented at 100 proof, and has proven rather popular indeed – it even appeared on an episode of Breaking Bad! The WhistlePig chaps are also growing their own rye grain on the farm, with plans to start distillation on the 4th of July, 2015.
A 100-proof, straight rye whiskey, aged for at least ten years through a unique double-barrel process. WhistlePig embodies the perfect combination of proof, purity, and age - hitting 'the sweet spot' in all three categories.
In short: more rye, all the proof, and the perfect age. WhistlePig was released in the summer of 2010 to great critical acclaim, earning 96 points from Wine Enthusiast, their highest rating ever for a rye whiskey.
Nose: Fresh peppermint and herbal thyme initially, with sweet vanilla and marzipan developing. Creamy butterscotch, raspberry jam and orange rind round it off.
Palate: Warm baking spices, nutmeg, cinnamon and allspice burst to life and are tempered by sweet muscovado sugar, bright oak and dark chocolate. Vanilla cola and caramel shortbread linger.
Finish: Medium-length, with warm rye spices, sweet malt and sour cherries.
