Rhone-y
Wine from the banks of the Rhone has been celebrated since Roman times. The unique of terroir of the steep Northern slopes is home to some of the most sought-after Syrahs in the world. The rocky soils of the lower Rhone Valley are home to Chateauneuf-du-Pape, the first French wine appellation to be established in 1936, where Grenache is in the ascendency, often seasoned with many other varieties allowed in the region. Both varieties love a warm climate particularly in Australia and Spain.
Grenache is earthy and red fruited, warming but rarely too tannic, Syrah offers dark fruit and peppery spice. Juicy in youth, stewed, complex and meaty when mature. Loves stewed meats, rich gravy and mature cheeses.
