Compass Box was launched in 2000 by the American John Glaser, who was previously International Marketing Director at Johnnie Walker. To promote his whisky, John travelled through London visiting pubs and bars with samples and, in idiosyncratic style, handing out business cards billing himself as “John Glaser – Whisky Zealot”.
Compass Box’s modus operandi and strong work ethic is what sets them apart as an independent bottler and blender like no other. Compass Box buy individual casks and focus on creating a craftsman-like boutique product. None of their bottlings are chill-filtered, nor is any colouring added and are all married exclusively in American oak. This brings the characteristic sweetness to the whisky.
To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the legendary Chicago punk rock whisky bar, Delilah's, Compass Box have once again created a limited edition Scotch whisky in collaboration with owner and whisky enthusiast, Mike Miller.
The recipe for the second Compass Box homage to Delilah’s was built around a small parcel of the original Compass Box Delilah’s blend released in 2013 - a luscious, American oak-aged whisky that was aged in cask for a further five years. With this as a base, Mike suggested adding malt whisky aged in Spanish Sherry casks, also made of American oak.
The result is a delicious Scotch whisky with notes of vanilla and spice, and rich Sherry character. It’s another incarnation of the shared vision Mike and Compass Box have for whiskies that everyone can appreciate and enjoy!
Nose: Pecan, blackberry, butterscotch, Bourbon biscuits, a touch of grassy malt.
Palate: Spicy sherried malt (plenty of clove and ginger notes coming through), atop layers of chocolate ice cream and praline.
Finish: Fruitier on the finish than the palate, with lingering apricot and green apple.
