Established in 1948, Douglas Laing is a leading creator and purveyor of the finest Scotch Whisky with particular focus on artisan, Small Batch and Single Cask bottlings. A proud family business in its third generation, our goal is to continually exceed the expectations of our customers and consumers around the world by offering the most special, quality-driven and unique Scotch Whisky experience.
Previously known in the industry as "Vatted" Malt (a term that is still preferred by all at Douglas Laing), Blended Malt differs from simply Blended Whisky in that it contains no Grain Whisky, and is therefore widely considered a superior category. Their 'Remarkable Regional Malts' - Big Peat from Islay, Scallywag from Speyside, Timorous Beastie from the Highlands and Rock Oyster, displaying the best from the Islands - are Blended Malt Scotch Whiskies, combining the spirit from some of the regions' finest Distilleries to produce the ultimate territorial tastes of Scotland. If a Single Malt is a violin, you might consider a Blended Malt an entire orchestra.
Douglas Laing's Scallywag is a Small Batch bottling created using only the finest Speyside Malts including - amongst others - Mortlach, Macallan and Glenrothes. Bottled at 46% alcohol strength and non chill-filtered, this Small Batch bottling has a distinct rich, dark colour - extracted from the Spanish Sherry Butts used during maturation. In fact, they use 40% first-fill Sherry butts in the mix.
Nose: Sweetness jumps up like an excited puppy. Icing sugar, sultanas and candied ginger. A few hints of grain here and there, but sweetness steals the show.
Palate: The sweetness surprisingly retreats, revealing nutmeg and cereal. Vanilla comes in near the end. Cinnamon too, giving it a prickle of spice.
Finish: A pinch of oak spice joins the vanilla and sherry for the finish.
