Matusalem was originally produced in Cuba where it was the best selling brand. After the Cuban revolution in 1959, the family and the Matusalem brand went into exile, and was established in the United States. However, the Cuban government carried on making rum in the former Matusalem factory in Santiago de Cuba. After many family feuds, the Matusalem Rum brand was relaunched in 2002. The brand wanted to focus on its Cuban roots, though the rum is now produced in the Dominican Republic. In 2016 the brand also opened its own ageing and bottling facilities in the Dominican Republic.
Ron Matusalem went and sourced some wine casks for this limited edition release! The rum is charcoal filtered and matured in a solera system, before it's finished in casks which previously held Tempranillo wine then blended with a little Matuslem 15 Solera. The tropical notes from the rum work wonderfully with the spicier notes from the wine cask, with just 8,000 bottles released.
