The Nikka company was set up by one of the Godfathers of Japanese Whisky, Masataka Taketsuru. Masataka was an organic chemist and was the first Japanese man to learn to make whisky in Scotland studying at Hazelburn distillery in Campbell Town. Nikka is now one of the Japanese great producers, making a range whiskies and other spirits in two distilleries, Yoichi situated in the North Island of Hokkaido and Miyagikyo distillery in Aoba-ku, Sendai.
Nikka Pure Malt Red is a whisky for pleasure seekers. With a majority of fresh and fruity malt whiskies from the Miyagikyo distillery, there is no denying the charming character of this intense, yet approachable malt.
Tasting Notes
Nose: A swathe of fresh fruit; peaches, cherries and raspberries, with bright, heady aromas and a hint of green herbaceousness.
Palate: More fruit, with notes of spiced strawberries, stewed cherries and a toasty edge from the oak. Very clean and pure, and extremely refreshing.
Finish: The soft summer fruits slowly subside, with just a whisper of peat smoke at the finish.
