Storywood Tequila has "the heart of Mexico and the soul of Scotland" and was founded by Scottish chef, whisky enthusiast and wood ageing expert, Michael Ballantyne, who was inspired to create this innovative tequila while spending time in his mother's hometown of San Miguel De Allende, Mexico.
It was in his mother's hometown that Michael met Master Distiller Luis Trejo from Distiller La Cofradia. The pair discussed their national spirits, the obvious differences, one made from Agave the other from a grain spirit. The similarity being rested in oak to enhance the flavour. But one thing that stood out was the continuous use of only using bourbon barrels with agave spirits, whereas whisky can be aged in a variety of different casks to create unique flavours.
Storywood tequila's begin with 10 year-old mature 100% blue weber agave, harvested from the lowland region of Jalisco and married with the natural spring water from Volcan de Tequila that flows down from the mountains. For the Reposado, the tequila is aged for 7 months in medium charred casks that previously held Dufftown Single Malt whisky from Speyside.
