Whittaker's Gin is a family business run by Jane & Toby Whittaker from Harewell House Farm in the heart of Nidderdale in North Yorkshire. They are passionate about Yorkshire and where they live and about the amazing local produce which they are so proud to be part of.
The distillery is an old agricultural building which they refurbished. Toby and Jane did a lot of the work themselves with help from some amazing local tradespeople. It is all fairly basic but very functional and this is where all the magic happens.
Their aim is to produce an artisan small batch, handcrafted spirit which reflects the Yorkshire countryside in a bottle.
Their still, which is called Jezebel is named after their daughters Jessica and Isabella. They also have her sister, Jezebel 2, which is now in operation as well. They are 100 litre stills imported from Bourbon Country in Kentucky from a well known USA supplier Hill Billy Stills. They are both hand crafted with stainless steel boilers and beautiful copper arms.
After distillation, all their gins are diluted using the natural Harewell water source to bring the ABV to 42% and left to settle and let the essential oils marry together before being hand bottled, batch numbered and labelled producing a truly authentic handmade gin.
Sloe berries are soaked in Whittaker's classic gin for at least six months then laced with liquorice for 24 hours. Following that, the spirit is re-distilled, resulting in a clear sloe gin!
Whilst the sloe's juiciness isn't as pronounced as you'd expect from a sloe gin, it's certainly evident and adds a delicious sweetness to the juniper notes to create a gin that's best enjoyed with tonic and a few blueberries to garnish.
