Alexander Zahel is the fourth generation winemaker and general manager of Winery Zahel, located in Vienna, Austria. Since joining his uncle in the business in 2005, Alex has focused his efforts on transitioning the winery toward organic and biodynamic production after Demeter, a process which was completed with full certification as of the 2018 vintage. Though his winemaking focus lies firmly in traditional Austrian varietals and the quintessential Viennese field blend, or Gemischter Satz, he also draws inspiration from his extensive travels in France and time working on vineyards in Australia and New Zealand. Our focus is now on the famous Wiener Gemischter Satz DAC (white field blend) as well as Pinot noir and St. Laurent in red.
Vineyards
The Reisberg vineyard sits just south of Vienna on dolomite limestone soils with 40 year old vines and Zahel work biodynamically enhancing biodiversity and producing healthier vines with better grapes.
Vineyards
The grapes undergo a spontaneous fermentation before maturation in stainless steel protecting those delicate floral aromatics.
Tasting Notes
The 2019 vintage of this wine is an absolute stunner. Rich with ripe citrus, stone and tropical fruits, touches of exotic spice and floral notes lead onto a rounded palate with balanced, fresh acidity, a touch of residual sugar, and a long finish.
Try with Asian style seafood dishes, roast pork, or something with a bit of delicate chilli spice to it.
