Bertrand Ambroise Nuits St Georges

Maison Ambroise origins date back to the 18th century. At this time only a few parcels had been worked over several lifespans.

Bertrand Ambroise took over the vineyard from his father-in-law in 1987. He is gradually phasing in organic farming. Abandoning the use of chemical products in favour of natural products to stimulate the vines so that they themselves produce the necessary substances to fight pests and diseases in the vineyard.

Pinot Noir,

All of the products used are organically certified. He removes many of the leaves around the bunches of the grapes to get riper tannins and has de-stemmed all the Pinot Noir since 2002 and macerates up to 28 days. In total he owns 21 hectares of vines mainly in Nuits Saint George.

Medium garnet. Intense beautiful Burgundian perfumed Pinot Noir. Mainly primary fruit, but with a savoury edge, bacon perhaps. Sous Bois. Some spicy oak, but not obtrusive. Medium acidity and astringency. Sweet, light, delicate fruit. Extremely long, with tangy perfumed finish.

Mark - This is where my love affair with Burgundy all began. I had refrained from reaching for anything from iconic and reputable appelations for some time after starting at Latitude. Somewhat out of respect for these revered wine regions, somewhat out of imposter syndrome and somewhat because of the price. Having found my feet for a few years I began to ponder questions out loud to the small confined walls of our archway shop out of sheer curiosity "Which would you drink if you could only have one for the rest of your life, Bordeaux or Burgundy?" Expecting a ressounding consensus and not understanding that each region has it's own unique quality that oppose each other somewhat. It wasn't until I decided to treat myself to a birthday meal with my favourite dish Beef bourguignon, and thought I'd best have a wine to match. I now know having explored Burgundian wines that the Pinot Noir could have been a little weightier to match the dish, however... this wine well and truly changed my appreciation of wine. When the stars align and all that... I revisited a 2013 vintage at Christmas with the obligatory lashings of Turkey and needless to say this wine really hit the crescendo of its concerto and remains one of my favourite wines in the shop, only a few of which make the list undoubtedly.
