Doja Prokupac

Doja is a family-owned winery with a long tradition of vine-growing and winemaking dating back ever since 1895, located on the slopes of the mountain Jastrebac with an altitude of 470m. The specific climate has a difference between day and night temperatures of up to 15 degrees in ripening period, making the Toplica region so unique and interesting.

Varieties planted for making white wines are Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Tamjanika and for red varieties are Prokupac, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Most planted is the indigenous variety Prokupac which is a symbol of Serbian winemaking. It is only one of few Serbian indigenous varieties and its creedal is located right here in Toplica.

Prokupac,

Prokupac is a red wine grape variety indigenous to the former Yugoslavia. Today the variety is found in large quantities in the former Yugoslavian states of Serbia, Kosovo and North Macedonia, although it remains largely unknown outside of these countries.

Prokupac is well-suited to the terroir of its cold climate homeland. It has the ability to withstand temperatures of down to -18° celsius (0.4°F). It is a vigorous variety in the vineyard, producing grapes with thick skins that offer resistance to botrytis bunch rot giving vignerons an option for a hands-off managment approach.

During the ripening period, the vineyard temperatures range from 29-30C during the day and falling to 15C at night. This temperature swing provides ideal conditions for the accumulation of phenological compounds in the berries.

The winery is equipped with a brand new "Bucher Press" and destemmer as well as high quality inox vinifiers. All the oak barrels are used for long maturation periods.

The Prokupac variety is an autochthonous Serbian variety whose first written data date back to the 14th century. Doja Prokupac is the first wine from Serbia to win the BIWC trophy award for the best red wine from the indigenous variety in the Balkans.

The palate has layers of fruit, both bright and dark cherry notes, along with delicate oak, with an elegant and well balanced finish.
