Previously known in the industry as "Vatted" Malt (a term that is still preferred by all at Douglas Laing), Blended Malt differs from simply Blended Whisky in that it contains no Grain Whisky, and is therefore widely considered a superior category. Their 'Remarkable Regional Malts' - Big Peat from Islay, Scallywag from Speyside, Timorous Beastie from the Highlands and Rock Oyster, displaying the best from the Islands - are Blended Malt Scotch Whiskies, combining the spirit from some of the regions' finest Distilleries to produce the ultimate territorial tastes of Scotland. If a Single Malt is a violin, you might consider a Blended Malt an entire orchestra.
Douglas Laing's Big Peat is a feisty Islay character with a sweet side. This is a small batch bottling, without colouring or chill-filtration and only contains Islay Malt Whiskies, including Ardbeg, Caol Ila, Bowmore and (even the now closed) Port Ellen to name but a few!
Nose: Warm slabs of tangy peat. Hints of chocolate, coffee and cedar with spices, walnuts and almond. A touch of cinnamon with oily smoke.
Palate: Simple, easy going, but delicious. Notes of heavy smoke, cut grass, peanut, spices and peat.
Finish: Quite abrupt with cut grass, coastal notes and smoke.
