Georgiev & Milkov Pink Side of Rubin Rose

In 2014 Petar Georgiev and Radostin Milkov started their own project. After gaining enough experience in various places around the world including the USA, New Zealand, China, Austria and Malta the two friends began working on the Bulgarian stage bringing in a bunch of fresh ideas. They decided it was high time that local varieties like Mavrud and Rubin should get the attention they deserve both by the wide public and the wine experts.

The young winemakers set on a journey through the wine corners of Bulgaria in order to find grapes from pristine terroirs for their wines – a 40 years old vineyard with Mavrud near the village of Novi Izvor and another 40 years old vineyard with Rubin near the village of Brestovitsa.

2020 has marked a debut for a white wine under the Georgiev/Milkov label from a particularly interesting variety – the so called Red Misket. It is a grape which has been growing in these lands for many years but very rarely have wineries had the courage to work with it. Petar and Radostin’s style allows for all their wines to feel modern and to drink elegantly, revealing the authenticity and beauty of the indigenous Bulgarian grape varieties.

Rubin,

Rubin, an indigenous Bulgarian grape variety that comes from a crossing of Syrah and Nebbiolo made in 1944, and grows on Georgiev and Milkov's 40-year-old vineyard near the village of Brestovitza in southern Bulgaria. Here the vines grow on flatland under the view of the Rhodopi mountain's northern slopes.

Grapes are hand-harvested, carefully sorted and gently pressed under temperature control. 60% is fermented in steel tank and 40% in French acacia. The final wine is aged for four months in acacia.

This pink wine is a lovely celebration of Rubin's versatility. (A cross between Nebbiolo and Syrah).

Pronounced aromas of white cherries, strawberries, blossom and vanilla. On the palate its plush and moreish with a medium body and zingy red fruits with a  long finish. Limited production of 3500 bottles.

Delicious paired with chargrilled chicken, barbequed mackerel, fresh salads with cherry tomatoes, or falafel.
