Leconfield Syn Sparkling Shiraz

Leconfield Coonawarra was established in 1974 by noted oenologist, Sydney Hamilton. During a winemaking career spanning nearly 60 years, Sydney was highly regarded for his contribution to the industry. At the age of 76, Sydney Hamilton still yearned to make a classic Australian Cabernet Sauvignon and set himself the task of finding the right district in which to establish his own vineyard and winery – and Leconfield Coonawarra was established.

Today Leconfield’s winemaking direction is driven by highly regarded winemaker, Paul Gordon. Leconfield Cabernet Sauvignon has established itself as one of the most distinctive on the Australian market and has a dedicated following throughout Australia and around the world. The Merlot is meticulously selected so that the small volume released each year is extremely sought after and is regarded as one of the best examples in the district.

Over the last two decades and further reinforced through recent show success, the Riesling vines selected and planted by Sydney Hamilton in 1974 have yielded wines that have become benchmarks of the variety within the Coonawarra region.

Shiraz,

Coonawarra Shiraz sourced from the Leconfield estate is made first into a dry red style and matured on its light yeast lees for several months. In the same year as harvest, the wine is re-fermented under pressure to allow for the natural carbon dioxide to be dissolved into the wine to create the effervescence then bottled under pressure after the liqueuring that adds to the creaminess of the palate.

Fresh Coonawarra Shiraz was made in a fine, elegant style and matured in oak, 31% of this cuvee is aged in 1-3 year old French Oak barrels for just a few months.. Secondary fermentation has provided natural effervescence and the wine has been liqueured to give a creamy palate. 2% vintage fortified was blended in to liqueur the wine to provide complexity.

Rich chocolate and raspberry fruit with a fragrant yeasty complexity. Medium bodied with a big burst of flavour, this Shiraz has zesty berry fruit flavours, textured, creamy body and refreshing bubbly palate. Round, rich and with clean acidity.

This sparkling Shiraz is lovely on its own, but try it with duck, feta and beetroot salad or hummus and Turkish bread.
