Alejandro Sejanovich is arguably Argentina’s most knowledgeable viticulturist.

Having worked as vineyard director for Bodega Catena Zapata for 16 years, he pioneered high-altitude vineyard planting and conducted ground-breaking research into Mendoza’s Malbec clones. With Manos Negras, Alejandro combines his love of minerality and altitude with a magical touch in the winery to produce some of the region’s most terroir-driven wines. Not only altitude but also latitude play a part in the wines from Manos Negras all capturing the spirit of Manos Negras through a myriad of soil types and grape expressions.

Production

Sourced from the Altamira district in the southern Uco Valley at an elevation of 4,000 feet. Altamira is renowned for Mendoza’s most distinctive soil profile—a mosaic of sandy, silty, and stony soils interwoven within the same vineyard. The stony parcels are particularly striking, their round rocks coated in a white layer of calcium carbonate. These soils are notably low in organic matter yet rich in minerals, a combination that naturally limits yields and fosters exceptional concentration of aroma and flavour.

Gentle de stemming, cold maceration for 2 days and whole berry fermentation with natural yeasts at a maximum temperature of 22° C. There is extensive punching down for the first 7 days of the 12 day fermentation.

Tasting Notes

The autumn berry aromas are earthy, with flavours of bramble, chocolate and plum with some earthy spice.

Juicy but robust enough to stand up to BBQed pork.
