RED AMERICAS WINE CASE

We have curated two wine cases to supplement our AMERICAS Wine & Spirits Season that celebrates North, Central & South America.

Altos Las Hormigas Malbec
In 1995, 2 Tuscan winemakers visited Mendoza. They recognised the potential of the, as yet, unplanted highlands with seams of calcitic rock running through them. They brought in renowned soil scientist, Pedro Parra, to map the best sites and started producing wines biodynamically and with minimal intervention. The goal has always been to capture the elegance and minerality from these uniue soils. Fermentation is in large, neutral oak fermentors, followed by aging in concrete: supple, fresh and red fruited.

Caliterra Petreo Carmenere
This has been a shop favourite for years, from the Caliterra Cholcagua Valley Estate it's a Carmenere that shows why this variety is becoming Chile's signature red. Stainless steel fermentation followed by 6 months in used oak gives soft fruit, floral and spice notes: juicy but with a little tannic grip and savoury complexity.

Shadow Point Pinot Noir
Shadow Point is a reference to the fog that forms over the coastal Vineyards near Monteray Bay every evening. This brings the temperature down significantly, allowing Pinot Noir to develop fresh acidity. A period of cold maceration maintains the freshness of fruit, partial oak aging adds complexity and siljky tannins.

Kaiken Classico Cabernet Sauvignon
Kaiken have been our go-to Mendozan producer for Malbec for years, but some would argue that their Cabernet Sauvignons are even better. Grown at 950m altitude and from 30+ year vineyards, 60% of the wine see 6 months in oak. Rich fruit with eucalyptus notes, well structured but with soft tannins.

Cline Cellars Old Vine Lodi Zinfandel
Lodi is a region just inland from San Francisco which, uniquely, has many of the oldest Zinfandel vines in the USA, many pre-dating prohibition. The Cline family have been harvesting this fruit since the '80's, low yielding but highly concentrated: slow fermentation, followed by 8 months in French Oak. Deep, berry fruit, rich with anise and vanilla notes.

Pisano Cisplatino Tannat
The Pisano family share an Italian and Basque heritage and is nestled in Progreso, 45 minutes uphill from Montevideo, some 20km from the broadest point of the Rio del Plata estuary before it meets the chill of the South Atlantic. Cisplatino refers to the area located "on this side" of the Río de la Plata and the Pisano brothers showcase the unique identity of Uruguayan wines with this range focussed on freshness and fruit expression. Perfumed, lifted and bright, this is juicy bright Tannat.
