Producer Information

Robert Oatley Vineyards is the latest venture of the Oatley family winemaking dynasty, which was founded by the late industry legend Bob Oatley. His legacy continues in his eldest son Sandy, who worked alongside his father for many years and manages the business today.

Created in 2006, Robert Oatley Vineyards aims to embody the best that Australia can produce where classic grape varieties are matched to the leading wine regions of Australia. Along with grapes from the family properties, some dating back to 1858, the Oatley family draw upon select growers of excellence across a diverse range of climatic regions. A deep understanding of viticulture enables the team to identify the best vineyard sites in Australia.

The talented winemaking team is led by Larry Cherubino – one of Australia’s most awarded winemakers.

Production

Finisterre: [Ends of the Earth] – focussing on single-variety, single-region wines with an emphasis on selected special sites that display our preferred characteristics. Hand-harvesting, fruit sorting and intuitive winemaking delivers small-parcel wines with clarity, purity, great texture and flavour expression.

Grapes were picked 80yo bush vines from the Loulakis vineyard in the Blewitt Springs sub region of McLaren Vale. This vineyard site is made up of maslin sands over limestone calcrete, west facing 120-130m elevation.

Grapes were hand harvested at ideal ripeness, fermented on skins for 10-12 days, settled then matured in large format 3+ year old oak for 6 months.

Tasting Notes

Perfumed red fruits, a thing of beauty, bright red cherries and delicate spice aromas with soft supple flavours, distinctive musk notes. Vibrant, juicy and textured. Rounded with supple tannins. Incredibly long and “cherrified” finish.

Chill it down and drink with pork or have this at room temp with lamb.
