Ana Rola our “woman in wine” is born & bred in the Douro & since an early age knew what she wanted to do. To be a winemaker in the Douro Valley where she was raised. Where she can find originality, unbeatable terroir knowledge & overcome the challenges in creating a wine that stands out from the crowd!
The estate, Quinta de Remostias, remains from the XVIII century & is located in Peso da Régua, the center of Douro Valley. In 2014, Ana decided to leave her post as head wine maker at a large prestigious Douro winery to go it alone. She explains, “after so many years doing what I love for others, I think it gets to a point that we think ‘why not do it for myself.’”
Ana Rola shared, “To make wines that really tell you where they came from. Wine from specific vineyards with minimal intervention. Wines that are true & honest. We believe in what we do!’” & we do too! That’s why we organized a tasting panel, in which we opened 45 Douro wine samples (with 35 guests from wine novices to wine shop owners). Among them all, Rola wines were all showing to be a distinct winner in labeling/design, quality, value, aroma/palate & returnability.
Vinha das Marias was created as a tribute to Ana’s daughter and the daughter of her business partner and best friend. Helga and Ana’s daughters were both born at the same time and both called Maria. These 2 girls have very distinct personalities but are great friends. One is calm and caring the other is more robust and dynamic and they complement each other perfectly.
Ana was inspired by these factors and she created this wine with complexity, tannins, a robust intense character with dark fruit and spices in wonderful harmony with the silky texture, elegance and length. It makes a top Douro wine where you sense the terroir of this mountain region through the skills, knowledge and touch of a great winemaker like Ana Rola.
After fermenting in stainless steel tanks with controlled temperature this wine aged in French oak for 14 months. The balance is perfected by aging 80% in 2nd used barriques and the remain 20% in new barriques.
It is a beautiful dark violet, cherry colour with ripe fruit aromatic’s that are well integrated with the oak. Opulent and rich on the palate, the tannins and ripe black fruits are freshened by the juicy acidity and structured by the dry core. Gorgeous mid-palate finesse, focus and precision with a long robust finish.
