The name “Marne 180”: marne means marl, the variety of soil on which the vineyards are planted. 180 are the degrees of exposure of the vineyards, from south-west to south-east. This wine is made from grapes harvested in various vineyards located on hills in the Valpolicella area (Mezzane and Tregnago hills). Different sources and different grape varieties are important to obtain a well-balanced wine with the fine structure that only a few single areas in the Valpolicella zone can provide.
Grape harvest takes place at the end of September into the beginning of October. Grapes are then dried in fruit a storage structure where it is under controlled humidity for 4 months. Alcoholic fermentation and maceration lasts 40/60 days at a temperature of 15° C. The wine is then aged in Slavonian oak barrel for about 3 years. It is then blended and bottle aged for a further 6 months.
This wine is a strong ruby red colour. Clear and transparent. The bouquet has notes of vanilla and ethereal airs depending on the period of aging in the barrel; notes of sweet fruits such as currants, blueberries, cherries depending on the varieties of grapes. On the palate the wine is velvety, with a raisined character combined with the structure and typical stylish bitterness to give it good balance.
