The Torres family has been making wine in the ancient Catalán town of Vilafranca del Penedès, south-west of Barcelona, since the 17th Century. It is this tradition combined with innovation, dynamism and commitment to quality that has put Torres firmly on the world map. In 2010 Torres were recognised by the Drinks Business for its green credentials and awarded International Green Company of the Year.
In 1770 the monks of the Abbey of Montserrat settled in the els Desterrats property as penance. The area was renowned for its harsh climate and tough conditions.
Their work: To cultivate the land to provide food for the diocese.
Their legacy: The discovery of a new terroir and a fine wine.
The legend: Large barrels mysteriously disappeared. Some said that they were taken up to heaven by the angels.
DO Costers Del Segre's inland location far from the sea has for centuries side lined this area from world markets, producing wines with its own characteristic elements. Innovations in grape varieties and production methods have recently been introduced. It was the first place in Catalonia where the varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay were introduced, alongside its native varieties, and also “California" winemaking techniques were adopted.
Very deep, well-drained soils with a moderately fine texture, where lime trees are prevalent. The surface is not stony or gravelly and is dark yellowish-brown in colour. This soil has a low, Organic matter content and a very high calcium carbonate content.
10-15 days of skin-contact. 100% malolactic fermentation in barrels for 7-10 days at 22ºC. 100% of the wine is then aged in oak barrels for 15-18 months, 40% of which is new French oak from Nevers.
Dark cherry red with impressively intense fruit pigment. Delicious ripe forest fruit aroma (blueberries) with fine smoky and dried fruit notes. Exquisitely elegant with very fine fragrant tannins. Persistent, intense and potent, yet subtle too.
Really versatile, great with cheeses, paprika based dishes and also sweet potato based dishes and currys.
