Zavec Brothers Kugl White Blend

The grandparents on both sides of the Kavec brothers family were already involved in viticulture, but only for their own use and out of love for the vine. The two brothers started viticulture professionally in 1995, when their mother and father rented the first vineyards in Vareja and in Dravinjski vrh.

Over the years, they have gradually increased the acreage of vineyards and replanted vineyards so that today in four different locations, also Gorca and Podlehnik, they cultivate vineyards planted with eight different varieties, global and local, which are typical for the Styrian-Slovenian wine-growing region. According to some sources, Haloze is in the 5% of the world's wine-growing regions with the most favourable conditions for growing vines. Today, Haloze is known for its top-quality wine. Due to its openness to the east, the Haloze region has a sub-Pannonian continental climate, characterized by warm summers, dry and sunny early autumns and cold winters. The geography is characterized by varied short ridges that run in different directions. About three-quarters of the Haloze area is covered by marl from the middle of the Oligocene to the Pliocene era as it was almost entirely flooded by the shallow Pannonian Sea, this caused marine sediments to be deposited. On marl, soil has developed that, along with the favourable climate, makes this area so optimal for growing vines.

All of the Kavec Brothers vineyards have marl and sandstone soils, which gives the wines minerality and salinity in the finish. The vines are forced to dig their roots very deep to find enough moisture to survive. In all the vineyard sites the brothers follow the guidelines of sustainable cultivation, they fertilize the vineyards with organic fertilizers, sow honey plants during inter-row cultivation, and cultivate under the vine with various mechanical machines for tilling the soil and mowing the grass.

Chardonnay, Welschriesling, Furmint, Sauvignon Blanc.

Grapes: 50% Chardonnay, 20% Welschriesling, 20% Furmint, 10% Sauvignon Blanc.

Area of production: Stajerska, Slovenia/Haloze.

Soil Type: Marlstone and sandstone

Production process: Manual harvest, cold maceration for 12h, fermentation at 14 degrees Celsius inox tank.

Maturation: Matured on fine lees for 3 months in innox tank.

Kugl displays a light golden hue and an inviting floral nose. On the palate, it is surprisingly generous and powerful, with good acidity and a touch of salinity, leading to a long, fruity finish. Fruity and floral, full body, long after taste, saltiness and minerality.

This is a great wine for pan fried salmon dishes.
