Westland Flagship American Single Malt

There’s so much more to American whiskey than bourbon and rye, as Westland Distillery proves. The brand is one of the leading producers of American single malt whiskey, utilising a craft beer approach to make whiskey from a huge variety of malts, including chocolate and Munich malts. A brewer’s yeast is also used and all the barley comes from the US. Distillation takes place in two pot stills and classic American oak is the most popular cask choice, but there’s plenty of experimentation taking place at Westland. The distillery also benefits from the famously wet Pacific Northwest climate in its home in Seattle, which means the whiskeys mature much slower than in the heat of Kentucky, America’s whiskey heartland, to produce a more elegant style.

Westland's signature American Single Malt Whiskey is a culmination of over 10 years pioneering a new category of whiskey that has put America on the global single malt map. This latest expression represents the possibilities to be explored in single malt and captures the essence of the house style in one flagship bottle.

All the malt used is local sourced from Washington State including the following varietals;

Washington Select Pale Malt
Munich Malt
Extra Special Malt
Pale Chocolate Malt
Brown Malt
Bairds Heavily Peated Malt

Maturation is for a minimum of 40 months with the final blend being made up of the following cask types;

Cooper's Reserve New American Oak
Cooper's Reserve Used American Oak
First Fill Ex-Bourbon
First Fill Ex-Oloroso Hogsheads and Butts
Second Fill Ex-Oloroso Hogsheads and Butts

Tasting Notes

Nose: Custard filling, marionberry compote, maple brittle, toasted marshmallow.

Palate: Almond nougat, crème brûlée, black tea, white flower petals, malted milk balls.

Finish: This is a viscous whisky, it clings to the tongue providing a long sweet, grain rich finish.
